thank you! very cool and useful tut!

can we use this tool to cut a plan through our model? or does such a tool already exist?

Apologies for the super delayed response rG. You can use the command "Section" to create curves representing a cutaway. Section Tools organizes and automates multiple sections in the Layers dialog as well though.

Brian, I don't think you are addressing rG's question correctly.
I believe he wants to know if the sections can be directed on the Z axis so to create plans. I don't think you can and I don't know why.
Section tools is a very important implementation in rhino but it clearly needs more developement.

gulav,

Try the commands "stLayout" and "stNestLayout" These are the third and fourth options under the SectionTools plugin menu as well. Is that what you are looking for?

Hi Brian,

The tool is really cool. I tried using it for a sectional perspective rendering. But it doesn't rendering the section. Any idea why?

Thanks

Hi FF,
A couple possibilities come to mind, one is that your render plugin is not supporting section tools completely. What are you using for the rendering? Or the object your clipping may be open at that section location causing the surface fill to not work. Please send in your file and any other info to Tech@McNeel.com and I'll take a look.

I think the question that gulav and rG are asking is whether you can set the section to cut vertically, so you could orient the view be looking down on the model cut in plan view. It would be great to cut using the z-axis. I keep getting the message that the cut axis is vertical and nothing happens. It would be great to figure out.

The cut axis is determined by the active view/Cplane when defining the section. There are options in the command line as well to help with this choice but I believe you can get what you want by defining the section in the Front or Right viewports. This will make the section along the Z axis.

Hi Brian,

If I have a series of radial sections. How can I use "View Section" to see each of them. Do I have to rotate my C-Plane every time I tried to use "view section" command.

Thanks!

Hi Ken,

stViewSection can be used multiple times to add additional sections to the viewport display. You may need to use stClearAllViews though and activate each individual section separately as needed. Please send in a model please to Tech@McNeel.com if I've misunderstood your question.

How do you make 2d behind the cut?

Brian James said...

Hi (Anonymous),

I'm not understanding exactly what you're asking... but the sections are on their own layer and you can unlock them and use them in layouts or make2d if you need.

Please email any model to explain more to tech@mcneel.com if I can help further.

Hi Brian,

I'm using Rhino V5 on Mac.
I can't download this plug-in, is it because it does not supply Mac?

thanks

Lena

Hi Lena,

Yes, you are correct. This plugin is written for the PC version of Rhino and not for Mac Rhino. The developers will look at porting different tools as the Mac Rhino project develops but it is unclear if all of the PC Rhino tools available will also be available on the Mac.

I have a curved model that is oriented about the Z axis at around 30 degrees, creating sections through the model in different locations requires the sections plane to be re-oriented in every location; in section tools I cant find a way of orienting the cutting plane in the Z axis. Does section tools allow a section to be made which is not cutting through the X, Y or Z axis.

Hi,

Does the 'Pick' direction option do what you need? This is available in the command line when creating a new section, click where it says 'Dir=X'>Pick. Please send a sample model to tech@mcneel.com with a description of what you'd like to do if I've misunderstood the orientation you're after.

Hi everyone, just a little tip letting you know how to explore the maximum potential from SectionTools in Rhino 5, I use it to extract sections AND plans easily. Whenever you need a section, follow the tutorial provided on top of this page. Whenever you need a plan, just follow the same steps in FRONT (or any other elevation view) to create the general axis for the plans needed for each floor and then adjusted height as needed, on-the-go. Changing the CPlane in Perspective doesn't work, you need to change the view. Then I create a named view for each plan and set the CPlane on the surface of the slab on the current floor in it's corresponding named view (important, as it memorises the position for each view in particular). Hope this helps and if any other questions needed, feel free to ask. Have a nice day and huge thanks for the developers for this awesome tool without which Rhino would be a tad less useful for architecture (for drafting at least).

Hi there, thanks for making this plugin available. Unfortunately I'm having trouble loading it into Rhino. I get the error 'file not supported' when loading the sections tools installer. Any advice on how to fix this? Thanks!

Hi Lucas,

Can you tell me which version of Rhino you are using and which installer you downloaded exactly. This is probably due to a mismatched version. For instance, are you using the Mac work in progress or Rhino 5 for Windows and if the latter, is it the 32 bit or 64 bit version? You can also email tech@mcneel.com for support. Lucas, I think I know what the error you're seeing might be. If it's a Windows message that says that your Windows install doesn't know what program to open the RHI installer file with, You'll need to associate the file with a program called rhinoexec.exe on your system.
