Modeling screw threads (1 of 2)

Learn how to model screw threads using helical curves and booleans in Rhino. The threads shown are the type you would see at the end of a light bulb. Changes to the cross-section profile and path will provide you with ways of making alternate styles of threads as well.

Hi This is soooooo helpful, thank you! Wow, how talented you are to be able to demystify threads!

I got stuck on the edge fillet though. It works, but I - for safety sake - checked the model after filetting and sure enough there are loads of naked edges. I tried the join naked edges tool, and this worked fine bar two instances that simply won't budge. BUT even after a successful join, the object would become a 'BAD object. :( Any idea why this is happening for me?

Thanks again!

Hi Renate,

I'm glad this was helpful. When fillets don't properly trim with intersecting surfaces, it is often due to the radius being too large given the space the fillet surface has to work in. Crossing other surface edges also increases the potential of problems as those spots complicate the trimming process. You can send me the file and I will take a look if you like... brian(dot)james(at)mcneel(dot)com

I'd also suggest trying this in the v5 beta of Rhino which is available for free here http://www.rhino3d.com/nr.htm
